Jordan Rakei – Friend Or Foe

28th June 2024 · 2020s, 2024, Music, Soul

The moment you first hear Jordan Rakei’s stunning voice, you imagine you must be listening to some long-lost soul singer from the Sixties or Seventies.

But this slice of vintage soul channelling Marvin and Curtis to perfection comes not from the past, nor from the USA, but is a brand new tune by Jordan Rakei, a New Zealander with the voice of an angel.
A very soulful angel.

Now based in London, the New Zealand-born, Australia-raised singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer made his debut when he was just out of his teens for Ninja Tune back in 2013.

Now, after one self-released album and three with the small label, he’s signed to Decca for new album The Loop, an intensely personal affair filled with emotionally open ruminations on parenthood and childhood that expands his sound with an orchestra, brass section and choir.

A keen collaborator, he has enjoyed some success as the featured artist on tunes for other artists, including Disclosure’s Masterpiece, Loyle Carner’s Ottolenghi and Bonobo’s Shadows.

This one is all him – a rich, triumphant soundscape that bridges the gap between his soulful roots and a bold, expansive musical vision.

It’s a vision that extends far beyond the parameters of soul, as is evidenced by his choice of cover versions, which range from Radiohead – to Jeff Buckley.
